Thor Ramsey: More Than a Comic

The 700 Club

It doesn't matter that Thor Ramsey happens to work clean. He's funny. And funny is the thing that matters when you're watching a comedian. Thor had entertained thoughts of being a comedian since high school -- thoughts he shared with a high school friend.

"She had a dream one night that I did The Tonight Show," he said. "[She told me that I] had a good set, which always stuck with me. I thought, 'Well, if you're not going to follow your own dreams, you might as well follow somebody else's.'"

Ramsey explodes onto the stage like a good-natured funny bomb. His smart, loud and always straightforward brand of comedy has made him an extremely popular comedian. Thor's humor is laced with compassionate sarcasm and reflects his passion for truth and the Person of Jesus Christ.

He pokes fun at the stereotypes people have about Christians and the evangelical subculture while exposing much of pop culture for what it is -- ripe comedy material. Thor picks on fashion models, the Atkins’ diet and greeting cards with just the right words and timing.

His unique observations dispel cultural and social myths as he gives the audience his extremely permanent cure for a neighbor's barking dog, a recap of the Left Behind series and why single people shouldn't marry someone they love. His brand of truly alternative comedy is hysterically funny without being vulgar.

Ramsey says he found Christ on a few separate occasions in life. He recalls finding salvation in 1979 as a freshman in college. He says about the experience, “One day in college what happened to me is described perfectly by a man named Cyprian: 'I made that single, simple, necessary step toward God. I humbled myself before him and like a child said, 'I believe.' My darkened heart was infused with His presence and I knew . . . I knew . . . that the spiritual barrier between myself and God was gone. Our two hearts were reconciled.' Presently, I was aware of the Spirit, the very breath of the Father, coming into me from beyond this world."

Even after this powerful experience with God, Ramsey fell away from Christianity. "My earlier encounter with Christ was dismissed as an emotional experience. This is why I thought all Christians were dumber than I was. In my mind, I intellectually outgrew the Christian experience or so I thought.” Fortunately, in 1993, six months after he was married, Ramsey returned to God.

Just like his life, his comedy routine has gone through stages of change. He says there was a time a club owner told him they wouldn’t invite him back because his act was too dirty. On another occasion, he was about ready to go on stage when event organizers told him that profanity was not allowed. He hurried to change his act to make it acceptable for the crowd. That night he performed in front of 1,500 people from 8 to 80 years old and says it felt really good to reach such a big demographic. After that time, he revamped his act to fit a broader audience. By the time he came back to Christ, his act was already about 95 percent clean.

Now Ramsey says his comedy is for Christians and non-believers. He doesn’t try to sound too “churchy” or use lingo that people outside the church wouldn’t understand. Because of that, he thinks his comedy can reach more people. He says there are some references he might use in a church setting that he wouldn’t use in a club, but other than that his comedy isn’t any different. He is reaching an audience that is looking for something witty, something different than the dirty jokes and verbal pornography used by many comedians.
