Quite possibly one of the greatest guitarists in the world, Phil Keaggy is still making music after more than 30 years. And he makes it beautifully.
Phil’s career has produced more than 50 albums. One of his first instrumental masterpieces is entitled, The Master and the Musician and today, it’s being re-released as a double CD.
Scott Ross:  As the music developed in you, did you change? How has it changed?  How have you changed? When you go back and listen to this you say, 'It’s still fresh.'
Phil Keaggy: It is. I’ve done a couple instrumental albums. One is still waiting in the wings, and this one, The Song Within. It has a lot of flavors of the Master and the Musician. There’s a thread that’s been woven throughout all the years, a melodic thread, and I think it comes from the same heart and spirit I have. It’s like it says even though our outer man decays, our inner man is renewed day by day. Jesus never gets old.
Phil has sell-out concerts around the country. He’s still going strong as one of the most sought after studio guitarists in the country. Yet Phil is a humble soul.
Ross:  Did you consider yourself a Christian musician or a musician who happened to be a Christian?
Keaggy:  That’s kind of a loaded question.  Ah, next.
Ross:  What else do you want me to talk about?
Keaggy:  Actually the way I felt about it, I was 100% musician, and then when I was born again, I belonged to Jesus before I belonged to my guitar.  I feel, you can have Jesus without music and have peace. Conversely, if your music is without the Lord, your life in my opinion goes nowhere.
Some have said to Phil that he could have been “really” famous, but he followed Christ with his music. And Phil’s response to that...
Keaggy:   That’s not necessarily true. That’s an illusion to say I could have been something.
I believe I became somebody because of Jesus, and I have no regrets that I surrendered my life to the Lord.
